On The Vice with Tom Jarman: Tying THE Orange Beaded Black Streamer
This simple and quick-to-tie fly is one of Tom Jarman's most reliable and versatile streamers. It's suitable for fishing on both lakes and rivers, for wild and stocked trout, and has even accounted for yellowbelly on lakes. This was Tom's best fly pattern on his most recent trip to Lake Dartmouth.
The fly is tied on a size 10 Hanak 200 hook, but can also be tied on other streamer and wet fly hooks such as a Hanak 230 or 250.
Materials
- Hook: Hanak 200, size 10
- Bead: Fulling Mill 3.2mm Fl Orange
- Tail: Black Marabou
- Flash: Pearl Krystal Flash (optional)
- Rib: Red Wire
- Body: Peacock Spectra Dubbing
- Collar: Peacock Spectra Dubbing
- Hackle: CDC Feather
Tying Steps
1. Tie in marabou and flash
Tie in marabou and one piece of flash on either side of the tail.
2. Tie in the rib
Tie in red wire on top of the tail.
3. Build the body
Dub Spectra dubbing to the front, leaving a space for the hackle.
4. Wind the rib
Wind wire forward to behind the bead.
5. Add the hackle
Tie in the CDC feather by the tips.
6. Finish the fly
Wind the CDC feather for the hackle, tie off, and add one turn of Spectra dubbing for the collar to finish.
Why this fly works
The combination of black marabou and an orange bead gives this streamer a strong silhouette with a bright trigger point, effective whether you're stripping it through lake margins or drifting it through river pools. It's a pattern worth keeping in numbers, since it's quick enough to tie a handful in an evening.
