Ask any experienced fisher what they'd grab first on the way out the door, and polarised sunglasses will be near the top of the list. They're not a fashion accessory. They're one of the most useful pieces of gear you can own, and they can be the difference between seeing fish and just seeing glare.
The problem: glare on the water
Sunlight bouncing off the water's surface creates a wall of reflected glare. It's harsh on your eyes, and it hides what's happening below the surface. Standard tinted sunglasses make everything darker, but they don't cut the glare, so you still can't see through it.
How polarised lenses fix it
Reflected light comes off the water in a horizontal wave. Polarised lenses contain a special filter that blocks that horizontal light while letting useful light through. The result is that the glare disappears and you can see into the water instead of just across the top of it.
The benefits on the water
1. You can spot fish and structure. Cut the glare and suddenly you can see weed beds, drop-offs, submerged timber, rock ledges and the fish holding around them. Whether you're sight fishing the flats or scanning a river run, this is a genuine advantage.
2. Safer wading and boating. Being able to see the bottom means you can spot holes, slippery rocks and hazards before you step on them or motor over them.
3. Less eye fatigue. Squinting into glare for hours is exhausting. Polarised lenses ease the strain, so you stay sharper and more comfortable through a full day.
4. Better contrast and colour. With glare out of the way, colours look richer and details are easier to pick out, which helps you read the water and watch your line.
5. Eye protection. Good sunglasses shield your eyes from UV, wind, spray and the odd wayward lure or hook on a bad cast. Your eyes are worth protecting.
Why Smith Optics?
Smith has built a strong reputation among anglers, and there's good reason for it.
ChromaPop lens technology filters out specific wavelengths of light that muddy colour perception, giving you sharper clarity and more natural, vivid colour. On the water, that means easier fish spotting and less strain.
Polarised options built for fishing. Smith offers a range of lens tints to suit different conditions. Green and blue mirrors suit bright, open water, while bronze and copper tones tend to work well for contrast in lower light and shaded water.
Frames made to stay put. Fishing means wind, movement and humidity. Smith frames are designed to be lightweight and secure, with wraparound coverage to cut side glare and keep the elements out.
Built tough. They're made for real outdoor use, not just sitting on a shelf.
Choosing the right lens
- Bright, open water: darker mirrored lenses for maximum glare reduction
- Overcast or low light: lighter or high-contrast tints
- Mixed conditions: a versatile mid-tone lens
